(no subject)

Somewhat stressed at the moment. Today has been a continuation of the frustrations of yesterday, except this time instead of just me not being able to think clearly I now can't think clearly, have been locked out of my user account 3 times and had to deal with the IS helpdesk, who are now 'looking into it' and managed to come a cropper of the xenophobic access restrictions once again. It was the most I could do to calmly explain this all to Jeremy my boss in the hopes that he could sort them out for me. Ah well we'll see.

Need to write letter to insurance company. Need to go shopping for clothes, but daren't go this evening as I came into work late due I guess to enthusiastic bopping of my alarm clock yesterday morning, managing to set it an hour later than normal.

Despite assurances to the contrary, kissycat1000 worries me with what she's going through at present.

Managed to stuff up my HDD in my games machine with blessed Partition Magic. A word of warning - I believe Windows XP does something proprietary with the last 7MB or so of a disk when it installs - the partition is always approximately that much smaller than the disk it's being installed on. It worked fine when I copied it over to the new drive and expanded the partition out to the whole disk, presumably because there was no data in the last section of the disk to worry about. But when there was data there and the partition table said that the partition also occupied that space, blue 'STOP' screens and so forth seemed to be the order of the day on booting. I might be able to get around it by blanking the last 7MB or so of the disk. I'll let you know how I get on.

So that's another fun thing I've got to do tonight.

I could do with a drink.

XP and partitions...

I've fixed it good now.

Here's what happened:

1) IBM is in machine
2) Copied IBM -> Maxtor with Partition Magic 7.0 (having to resize the partition on the IBM first)
3) Maxtor boots fine, IBM doesn't - blue screens on booting.
4) Tried to resize the partition but PM7 reported uncorrectable dirty shutdown errors
5) Booted from Maxtor with IBM in as well - ran Chkdsk /f (not that it did anything) and shut down
6) Now able to resize partition down 14MB using PM7
7) It now boots again from the IBM!

What this all means is that it pretty much confirms my suspicions that XP does something proprietary at the end of the partition/disk. Either that or for some reason XP detects the disk as a slightly different size than the BIOS/PM7 does and conflicts with it when it tries to boot. For information I'm just using a standard on-board IDE controller (VIA chipset).

Interesting huh?

If I could be bothered I'd blank the last 14MB of the HDD and extend the partition again to see if there's anything in there that was making it go do-lally. Makes you wonder what on earth trustworthy M$ are storing in there...?

[Additional: I'm almost certain there's stuff there at the end of the partition because the Maxtor was freshly formatted and set up with the partition going right to the end of the disk with no problems]

A 'special' entry for Sam ;)

Here is a 'special' entry for Sam.. the much beleaguered girl is under the sorry impression that because I haven't mentioned her much in my LJ that means she's not important to me.

Silly girl.

Nah, she's great to tease and wind up, as I proved earlier when I tickled her when she was taking a large gulp of her drink.. I tickled her tummy and she nearly snorted the drink everywhere! Much fun and merriment. Don't understand the torrent of abuse I suffered afterwards *grin*...

She's here now reading this and snorting derisorily about what I've put in here so far.. much to my amusement... OW!! she just slapped me round the head *grin*.

See that's the fun - we take the piss out of each other.. well me out of her mostly - I enjoy the reaction I get. Aw, but she knows I don't mean it and that I think a lot of her :) Well if she didn't (or more likely had forgotten) then she does now *hugs*.
